Benefits of Red Wine

by chew.com
If you decide to drink alcohol, red wine is the best choice due to the presence of several different anti-oxidant compounds that can help boost your overall health.

The news that drinking moderate amounts of red wine can actually be beneficial for your health started circulating a few years ago, and by now most everyone has heard some variant of this information as every year researchers seem find a little more evidence to back it up. The key is moderation though, as large amounts of any type of alcohol can obviously be bad for your health too. However, if you do decide to drink alcohol, red wine is probably the best choice for a number of reasons including the fact that most red wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Chianti, and Merlot, all contain measurable amounts of melatonin. Melatonin is an anti-oxidant with anti-aging and cancer preventative properties, and it also helps regulate the body’s internal clock. This means drinking one glass of red wine at night can help you get to sleep faster and easier. Red wine is also thought to lower the risk of breast cancer, however moderation is again key here as drinking more than 1 or 2 alcoholic drinks per day appears to increase the risk of breast cancer in women.

Red wine also contains another very beneficial anti-oxidant compound called resveratrol that has also been linked to health benefits like reducing the risk of developing heart and cardiovascular disease and helping prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Resveratrol has also been linked to greater longevity as it has actually been shown to increase lifespan in animal studies and is thought to provide the same benefit for humans as well. Since resveratrol is an anti-oxidant, it has been shown to have some anti-inflammatory capability that can help boost your overall physical health in relation to the numerous diseases and ailments linked to inflammation in the body. Another beneficial ingredient in red wine is saponin, a compound that along with the reservatrol, has been found to help lower the amounts of the “bad” LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Although research has shown that people who drink more than two glasses of red wine per day have fewer colds than people who do not drink, moderate amounts of red wine have also been shown to help fight cancer as well. Researchers in Spain have done studies showing that consuming one glass of red wine per day actually reduced the risk of developing lung cancer by 12 percent, while other studies have shown that drinking four or more glasses of red wine each week can reduce the risk of men developing prostate cancer by just over 50 percent. Although excessive alcohol consumption has long been known to be unhealthy, the beneficial compounds in red wine have proven that moderate consumption can actually be quite good for you.
